What is a UX designer test?

UX (User Experience) designers are responsible for ensuring a web application is user friendly. They conduct research to understand how end-users navigate through a platform, and design ways to make that navigation as easy and enjoyable as possible.

he UX designer test asks multiple-choice questions that highlight what level of experience a candidate has with general UX designer competencies.

The test will evaluate an applicant's knowledge of digital application wireframing, prototyping and testing. It will also assess a candidate's overall suitability for the role, looking at their design thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as their ability to understand complex user needs.

A high score on this test shows a candidate possesses a strong understanding of both user and design requirements, making for an effective hire in a UX design role. Employers can use this as a screening test in the early stages of recruitment.

About the UX Designer Test

UX designers need to be broadly skilled, with an aptitude for research, technical concepts and applied creativity. UX designers collaborate with UI (User Interface) specialists in designing the navigation wireframe and the front-end visuals. Once completed, prototyped and tested, they hand over the technical information to a developer.

This test assesses a candidate's competency in role-specific skills to perform in a UX position.

Why should you use a UX designer test for recruiting?

Shortlisting UX designer candidates based on resumes alone is challenging. The role calls for a diverse range of skills, from specific technical abilities to less measurable creative skills. This makes it difficult to decipher who the best candidate would be in practice without further investigation.

A UX designer test removes this obstacle and gives companies the ability to distribute skills tests to any number of candidates. The comparative data you receive back will give an unbiased insight into how well matched each candidate is, making the recruitment process more efficient.

The test will highlight the level of understanding a candidate has of both technical and soft skills required of a quality UX designer. These include in-depth knowledge of content architecture, including building wireframes and navigation prototypes.

It also measures their ability to identify and understand user issues, creative problem-solving skills, commercial and design trend awareness, as well as their attention to detail and communication style, to handle user-testing environments.

Applicants highlighted as meeting the requirements of the role can be shortlisted, while those who do not demonstrate the necessary skill set can be excluded.

A UX designer test could be useful for the following additional roles:

  • UI Designer
  • UX Researcher
  • UX Architect
  • Content Strategist
  • Web Designer
  • Mobile Designer
  • Product Designer
  • Visual Designer
  • Information Architect

How our test assesses UX skills

Candidates will need to answer a range of questions that measure industry-specific technical skills where applicable, soft skills (e.g. teamwork), aptitude (e.g. error checking) and relevant personality dimensions (e.g. creativity). The results present a holistic view of how well suited each candidate is for the job at hand, using a data-driven approach.

The format varies by type of question, including multiple-choice for aptitude and technical skills, situational judgement for soft skills and agreement on a Likert scale for the personality dimensions. This approach ensures candidates are being assessed in an accurate and fair manner, and that results reflect the true underlying qualities of each candidate.

The characteristics, abilities and knowledge necessary to be a UX designer were identified using the US Department of Labor's comprehensive O*NET database. O*NET is the leading source of occupational information that is constantly updated by collecting data from employees in specific job roles.

During the development process, test questions were rigorously analysed to maximise reliability and validity in line with industry best practices. They were created by our team of I/O psychologists and psychometricians – who collaborated with subject-matter-experts – and field-tested with a representative sample of job applicants who have varying experience, just like you might find in a talent pool.

Each test is reviewed by a panel of individuals representing diverse backgrounds to check for any sensitivity, fairness, face validity and accessibility issues. This ensures each candidate has a fair chance of demonstrating their true level of expertise.

Our UX test is monitored to ensure it is up-to-date and optimised for performance.
